Mircea Lucescu: I cannot afford to give in
In the August issue of Shakhtar’s magazine readers will find sincere interview with the Pitmen’s coach. Mister spoke about how the military conflict in Ukraine has affected him and football players.
- Mister, what motivates you personally in this situation to keep the team’s bar at the highest level?
- This is my life, as well as theirs. I understand better than anyone else what they are going through. If I had given in, then perhaps everyone would have given in. I cannot afford it. And I stand on my feet. Trees die standing.
- It looks like you like facing challenges from life...
- In one of my books, Mirage of Pitch, I said that my life is a constant struggle. Poverty in which we lived ... After the war there was a difficult situation, there was nothing to eat. The family had a pair of sneakers for five people - five brothers. We Lived in one room, there was no light, radio. There was nothing. When the radio emerged, all sat and listened all day long! Life has taught me to always fight. I always wanted to be the first - at school, everywhere. It helped that I was a good student, it came in handy in the future. "The big desire to achieve good results gives you a chance" - that's my motto. Fight and fight again. Often it was a struggle with myself not to give up in the most critical moments. I know it is very difficult for those around me. But I hope that my activity is an example for everyone else.
