Introducing opponents: Aalborg
As we previously reported on the website, Shakhtar has a friendly game against Aalborg BK from Denmark scheduled for February 7.
The Pitmen’s opponents represent one of the oldest football clubs, which appeared in the city with the same name in distant 1885. However, despite many years of performance in the Danish top flight, Aalborg has achieved major success relatively recently, while in the 2013-14 season the team claimed the golden double, becoming the league title holders and the domestic Cup winners.
All in all, Aalborg boast four sets of gold medals (1995, 1999, 2008, 2014) and three domestic Cup titles (1966, 1970, 2014). The Pitmen’s opponents also had a shot at participating in the Champions League, but progressed no further than the group stage.
In the current UEFA Europa League edition, the Champions of Denmark have been drawn into the same group with Dynamo Kyiv. At home, Aalborg thrashed the White-Blues 3-0, though they suffered a 0-2 defeat at Dynamo in Kyiv later. As a result, the Danes have claimed the second spot in their group, currently preparing for the Round of 32 meeting against Club Brugge KV, Belgium.
Aalborg play their home games at the Nordjyske Arena, whose seating capacity is 16,000. The Pitmen’s rivals have been coached by a 53-year-old Kent Nielsen, who is famous for his spells at Brøndby, Aston Villa and Denmark national team.
