Before match

Mircea Lucescu fielded the squad that had been expected. It should be noted that Ivan Ordets partnered with Yaroslav Rakytskyy at the heart of defence. Experienced Vyacheslav Shevchuk was deployed at left back. Oleksandr Gladkyy was spearheading the attack from the opening minutes. Fenerbahce’s coach Vitor Pereyra fielded Sow and Fernandao in the attacking line, with Nani and Diego operating behind them. Meireles was left on the subs’ bench, with Mekhmet Topal and Souza playing in the centre of midfield.

First half

The teams started the game using high tempo. The opening minutes saw an end-to-end game. As early as on 3 minutes, Teixeira got on the ball first, beating Bruno Alves in a duel, and was awarded a free kick. Srna took a dangerous free kick – the ball hit the wall of Fenerbahce’s players. The hosts responded with a long range effort from Nani, which was kept out by Pyatov. Shakhtar had a brilliant chance to open the scoring on 16 minutes: Teixeira beat the offside trap, bore down on goal but hit the ball wide. Late on the opposition goalkeeper saved a Taison shot and that of Gladkyy. As a result, the game ended 0-0.

Second half

After the half time break, the game remained as intensive as in the first half. The Turkish team managed to take control of proceedings for some time. Vitor Pereyra’s charges dominated ball possession, and Shakhtar were operating on the counterattacks. On 56 minutes, Taison picked up speed down the flank, came inside the penalty area, but failed to send the ball into the far corner of the net. After some time, Diego fired a shot from outside the penalty area – the ball flew wide of the near goal post, Pyatov was in control of the situation. Both head coaches tried to make the game more dynamic through substitutions, but it was not reflected in the final scoreline.

0-0 – Shakhtar and Fenerbahce played out a goalless draw. The winner of this tie will be revealed on 5 August in Lviv.
