Before the match

The first meeting on Ternopil’s pitch ended in a 5-0 win for the Pitmen. Compared to that match in Ternopil, Shakhtar retained just four players in their starting line-up. And all those who played against Malmo in the Champions League were given some rest by Mircea Lucescu, except for Viktor Kovalenko, who appeared in Sweden as a substitution player. We want to note the appearance of the 17-year-old Giorgi Arabidze among the first XI. The player list for the match also includes the reserve team players, who debuted for the first team in Ternopil: Andriy Korobenko, Oleksandr Zubkov and Andriy Boryachuk. With the captain’s armband on, Taison led the team onto the pitch for the first time, being his 100th appearance for Shakhtar.

First half

The match began with Shakhtar’s attacking moves, with Dentinho earning a penalty as early as on 4 minutes, which was masterfully converted by Facundo Ferreyra to make it 1-0. After that, the visitors started playing more actively, making Anton Kanibolotskyi involved in the game on two occasions. On 14 minutes, Ferreyra missed a thick chance of grabbing a brace, striking it from the edge of the box to fly just inches wide of the goalpost. The Pitmen did not force things, they just doubled the score in the 33th minute when Vasyl Kobin produced a stunning bicycle kick from beyond the box to make it 2-0. Wellington Nem also had a chance, but his effort from outside of the box was parried away by the opposition keeper.

Second half

After the break, the Pitmen stepped it up movement wise. A free kick by Dentinho missed the target, with a long-range shot by Ivan Ordets also going wide. Shortly after that, Arabidze also had his chance, but the visitors' keeper was in place. After a corner Ordets attempted a header – a defender of Ternopil cleared the ball from the goal line. On 63 minutes, Mircea Lucescu made a triple substitution, fielding the youth: Matviienko, Zubkov and Boryachuk. Just as in the first game, Boryachuk immediately scored a goal - this time, within five minutes of his being fielded, with Taison providing an assist – 3-0.

The Donetsk side continued to attack and missed several scoring opportunities: Kovalenko struck it into the goalkeeper, with Zubkov failing to lob it past the keeper and Boryachuk hitting his opponent while trying to tip the rebound home. But towards the end of the meeting, Boryachuk brought Nem - who was brought down in the box - one-on-one with the keeper. The spot kick was converted by Taison, who sealed the 4-0 win.

Thus, on aggregate, Shakhtar beat Ternopil 9-0. And the second-leg win is the Pitmen’s 100th Ukrainian Cup win. The quarter-final stage draw will be held on October 30
