On August 15, Kyiv will host the Donetsk derby Olimpik vs Shakhtar. Ahead of the match, we bring you a piece about the Pitmen meeting with the teams from their home city and the oblast.

So, the first such meeting in the time of independence of Ukraine is dated September 9, 1996. In the Cup Round of 32, Mariupol-based Metalurh hosted Shakhtar at Azovstal. The encounter ended 3-1 in favour of the Orange-and-Blacks.

All in all, the Pitmen played 75 competitive games in various tournaments against the teams from Donetsk and the oblast. 67 wins were claimed by the Pitmen, on 6 occasions the game ended in a draw, plus lady luck shone on the opponents twice. Goal difference: 182-48.

The biggest victory was claimed by Shakhtar on October 3, 2005 – it’s the 6-0 win at Illichivets at the RSC Olympiyskyi. Interestingly, three braces by Brazilians were registered in the game. The scorers are Jadson, Matuzalem and Brandao.

A match without any goals scored happened in the entire history only once: on August 19, 2006, Donetsk-based Shakhtar and Metalurh failed to score any goals against each other in a league game.

The most frequent score in the meetings is 2-0. It happened 16 times. On 15 occasions, the Pitmen secured this score, their opponents did so just once.

Let's look at the table of results broken down by opponents. For convenience purposes, the matches against Mariupol-based Metalurh and Illichivets are presented separately:

For a number of players, the oblast or city derbies were their debut games for the Pitmen. Let’s look carefully and find three current Shakhtar players on the team lists.
