On 19 December, Shakhtar’s opponents in the last 16 of the Champions League played on Matchday 17 in the German league.

Mainz 1-2 Bayern

Goals: 1:0 Soto (21), 1:1 Schweinsteiger (24), 1:2 Robben (90)

Bayern: Neuer, Bernat, Dante, Boateng, Rafinha, Schweinsteiger, Heyberg, Goetze (Pizarro, 77), Ribery (Weiser, 90+2), Robben, Müller

Mainz started the game in an energetic manner and on 4 minutes even scored following a cross from a right flank, but the referee signalled offside. However, a clear goal was conceded by Bayern following a cross from the same side. The visitors orchestrated a quick counterattack. Okazaki drilled a cross for Soto to slot the ball in. Bayern conceded fourth goal of the season.

In the following attack, Bayern earned a free-kick, which was expertly converted by Schweinsteiger, who made it 1-1. Then, Bayern totally dominated proceedings. Mainz tried to initiate counterattacks. For instance, on 49 minutes, a long ball over the defenders’ back followed. As a result, Malli bore down on goal but failed to beat Neuer.

But Bayern managed to pull out a win. On 90 minutes, Riberi picked up the ball, advanced to the edge of the penalty area, before feeding Bernat. The latter drilled a cross for Robben to fire the ball in first time.

After the Matchday 17, there will be a break in the German league until 30 January.
