Shakhtar in Brazil: stars and birds
On the evening of January 14, Shakhtar conducted their last training session before flying to Salvador. Traditionally, the team trained at Zico Sports Centre.
Running, ball control and mastering cohesion - that, in fact, has been today’s full set. Although, there was also a chorus. The caws, rather! Made by birds. At the height of training session, seven local birds having the characteristic sporty looks landed onto the pitch - and lifted an unprecedented cry. The fauna was pacified by the whole team, including Mircea Lucescu.
By the way, football passions ran high today on two fields of Zico Centre. Simultaneously with Shakhtar’s training, a nearby lawn played host to the match between the Friends of Zico and the Friends of Junior, the player who in the mid-1980s defended the colours of Torino, Pescara and the Selecao. Both stars of the Brazil national team, of course, were present on the field! It turned out that Junior and Zico organize such encounters on a regular basis every Wednesday, and all year round. And at the end of each such match, a similar game is played by the sons of Zico and Junior – against their friends. All the games are essentially officiated by the actual referee.
Shortly before the end of Shakhtar’s training, Mircea Lucescu sent to the Selecao veterans. When they saw Mister, the Brazilian stars interrupted the match - their meeting was very warm. Mister thanked Zico for the warm reception at his centre. And said, “See you later.” Who knows, maybe Shakhtar will return to Rio de Janeiro again.
