AEL vs Shakhtar: players’ opinion
Players of the Donetsk have reflected on the match with the Cypriot club.
Wellington Nem, Shakhtar’s midfielder:
- It was a good game. We tried to close the opponents down, but unfortunately we failed to score second goal. Plus, today there was an experimental squad, not the one we are used to. Perhaps, this problem made it a bit more difficult to win. I took to the pitch very motivated, because I had not played for long time. I will not be shy: my appearance made the team actions more energetic.
Fernando, Shakhtar’s midfielder:
- In the first half we did not act exactly as we should have. And after the break, we improved, and the whole match turned out to be not only difficult, but also interesting. Shakhtar always play to win. We knew that in the second half we had to look better and operate energetically. We created a lot of chances, but unfortunately there was no one which was converted into a goal. There was a lot of work. Plus, in this game, there were many young players on the field, who displayed a great performance. I will not even single anyone out. You can look at the success of the guys from U-19, who have reached the semi-finals of the UEFA Youth League. Believe me, the fact of them being at Shakhtar means that the guys show excellent results.
Oleg Kudrik, Shakhtar’s goalkeeper:
- I made my debut for the first team, however, I didn’t spend a lot of time on the field. I did not even touch the ball, unfortunately. Still, for me it is an experience, new sensations. It is up to coaches whether to deploy me in the first team. I think that today we did not play at full strength. Maybe, we were a little tired after making a trip. The opponents played at the highest level. They have skilful and quality players in their squad. Especially in the first half it was noticeable, AEL actively attacked through the flanks. In the second half we had a lot of opportunities to score, but Cypriots defended well, and in some episodes we were short of luck.
