Before match

Oleksandr Kucher was captaining Shakhtar’s squad, playing alongside Serhiy Kryvtsov in the centre of defence. Darijo Srna was left on the subs’ bench, with Ilisnho employed at right back. On his birthday, Anton Kanibolotskiy was fielded in the starting line-up. Oleksandr Hladkyi was spearing the attack; it was his hundredth game for Shakhtar.

First half

After five minutes since the start of the match, Shakhtar created a clear-cut chance: Teixeira received a ball following a through pass, beat Bandura, but missed the target. But soon Alex converted his second chance, playing a one-two with Taison before sending the ball into the corner of the net to make it 1-0. Metalurh went forward, but in all the episodes the ball would be stopped by either the Pitmen’s defence or Kanibolotskiy. In turn, Hladkyi sent the ball over the crossbar twice. The first half was controlled by Shakhtar and logically resulted in the second goal: Costa made a 70-metre run during a counterattack before feeding Teixeira, who sealed his brace to make it 2-0.

Second half

On 55 minutes, Metalurh’s defender Vyacheslav Checher received two yellow cards for showing dissent; Metalurh were reduced to ten men. The Pitmen dominated proceedings and combined a lot. During the second half, Mircea Lucescu gave playing time to Wellington, Marlos and Dentinho. Metalurh did not sit deep in defence responding to attacks with attacks, but Shakhtar looked confident in defence. Three times from time, Shakhtar came close to extending their lead: Hladkyi skipped past the opposition defender to shoot towards the far corner – the ball flew past the goal post; Bandura parried away shots from Marlos and Wellington.

2-0 – Shakhtar take three points in the game between two Donetsk teams and continue sitting in second place of the table.
