Introducing opponents: Carpi (Italy)
On September 3, Shakhtar are to play against the Serie A newcomers. Carpi Football Club from the town bearing the same name, have debuted in the Italian top flight this season, although the history of this team dates back to the early last century.
The year 1909 is officially regarded as Carpi FC’s foundation year. For many decades, the Biancorossi played in the lower Italian leagues. Interestingly, in the mid-1990s, a couple of dozen matches for this team were played by such well-known football personalities as Marco Materazzi and Simone Inzaghi.
In 2000, the club declared itself bankrupt, but was revived soon, and, as it turned out, it was not done for nothing. It took Shakhtar’s opponents 13 years to make it from the sixth division to the Serie A.
The team are coached by the 61-year-old Italian specialist Fabrizio Castori.
