Mircea Lucescu: I want to see character of my players

In the latest issue of Shakhtar magazine, an exclusive interview with Mircea Lucescu awaits the readers. The Pitmen’s mentor told us about numerous rumors related to his personality, about the relationship with reporters and shared his expectations of the new season.

- How can the crisis affect the preparation of the team?
- In terms of organizing events – the situation is very difficult. I hope that our players will approach this issue very reasonably and responsibly and realize that at such a difficult moment they should have the most positive attitude and help others survive the difficulties. It’s very easy to say, “I'm scared, I do not want to stay here anymore, so I am leaving.” In this case, they leave the locals to their own devices, and I do not want it. Yes, it’s a lot harder to stay. But we must continue to create a positive atmosphere for the fans and all those who found themselves in a difficult situation. We must make our contribution, be optimistic, be real sportsmen. Because people work in various conditions! And to those who love us, we must give something in return. So I try to reach their hearts, so that they react by their feelings.

- What do you expect from the next season?
- First of all, I will try to win the championship. We have players for this and all the conditions in place, plus the team talent of our performers. But we want to start it at a higher level than last season. Because our competitors will not be in a calm, relaxed state either – it doesn’t matter whether it’s Dynamo Kyiv or any other team. Those matches will be under continuous pressure. In such circumstances, I want to see the character of my players. Because if we win the league title in such difficult conditions, we are a great team. Passing this exam will be a tough test. This is a great opportunity for us as a team with strong character and talented performers. If I thought that we would not win, I would not stay here. But I want to win!
